Let's Go Horseback Riding!
Where to Hire a Horse for Trail
Riding
[Note: HTML and
PDF versions of this guide are available for
printing]
Introduction
The following is a list of stables that provide
horse rentals and/or trail rides. Hourly rates vary
and are subject to change. Some trails are subject to
seasonal closures. Most stables are flexible in
accommodating your needs by prior arrangement.
Reservations are recommended or required. Things to
keep in mind include:
- Almost all trail rides are now done with
guides. If not, be candid about your riding
experience. Most stables provide group and
individual lessons for a fee.
- Follow the instructions of your group leader or
guide.
- Wear long pants and sturdy shoes with
heels.
- Horses have the right of way on trails. But be
courteous to others you meet, as many trail users
do not understand the importance of trail etiquette
requiring them to defer to horses.
- Obey trail signs and never litter.
- Horses are individuals. Ask questions about
your horse's temperament and preferences. Be gentle
but firm in maintaining control. Do not jerk on the
horse's mouth.
- Be alert for things that could startle your
horse, or others.
- Volunteer your services to help in trail
maintenance.
