Bay Area Events for National Trails Day

      June 5, 1999

Corte Madera, CA (May 19th, 99)- What better way is there to spend a Saturday than taking part in a team effort to construct, rebuild or maintain Bay Area Trails that we, ourselves, use. On June 5th, 1999, individuals will be taking part in trail projects all over the nation. The day is almost a national holiday, National Trails Day. Any Mountain the ten store Bay Area specialized outdoor retailer, will be partaking in two trail projects, collaborating with Marin Open Space and The Trail Center in Palo Alto.

In the North Bay Any Mountain and Marin Open Space will work to connect two Preserves, the Maurice Thorner and the Roys Redwoods. A new trail will be constructed between the San Geronimo School and the Nicasio Valley Rd. Volunteers are asked to meet in the parking lot off of Nicasio Valley Rd. at 8:30am.

In the South Bay Any Mountain and The Trail Center will work to complete a reroute and reconstruct the heavily-used Castle Rock Trail at Castle Rock State Park. The western half of the trail will be moved to a new location and the existing eroded trails will be restored to a more natural state. For more information about this project visit the Trail Center website at www.trailcenter.org. Volunteers are asked to meet in the Partridge Farm Area of Castle Rock State Park at 8:30am.

Volunteers are advised to bring water, gloves, lunch and they should wear sturdy shoes, long sleeves, long pants and a hat. Tools and training will be provided. The first 50 volunteers will receive a free t-shirt and all volunteers will receive gift bag upon completing the projects. Both projects begin registration at 8:30am. The day will end about 3pm with a light lunch or barbecue.

Each year the American Hiking Society collaborates with local trails, park organizations and local companies to help rebuild, maintain and reconstruct important community trails! To volunteer or gain more information call (415) 927-2400 ext.339 or visit the event section on the website at http://www.anymountain.net.
