Trail Building Projects

Field Research Station at Gazos Creek

Updated January 10, 2003

We're working with the Pescadero Conservation Alliance at their Field Research Station at Gazos Creek (formerly known as the Mountain Camp) to improve a trail that runs along Gazos Creek Canyon near the San Mateo County coast. The Field Research Station is on land recently purchased by Sempervirens Fund and transferred to CA State Parks, which is adjacent to Butano and Año Nuevo State Parks. We may also create some short interpretative trails within the camp boundaries.
We'll start at 9:45 am for these events (meet at the Field Research Station -- approx. 3 miles east on Gazos Creek Road from the intersection of Cloverdale Road.)

Background for Gazos Creek canyon trail maintenance and construction project:Volunteers for the Sempervirens Fund (current owners of the property) built a trail following Gazos Creek from the camp property (farthest public road access) down toward the Cloverdale Road junction. We will improve the tread and reconstruct a small bridge above a great waterfall (flows in winter only). See the project information sheet for additional information and see photos from several sessions on our Photo Gallery pages.

Background for camp trails maintenance project: Many of the trails on the camp property are social trails that have become overgrown. We will clear brush and improve the tread where needed

Directions: From the Peninsula, take Highway 84 west to the Pescadero Road junction, one mile past La Honda. Travel southwest on Pescadero Road to the Cloverdale Cutoff and turn left. Turn left again on Cloverdale Road and travel south approximately 3 miles to Gazos Creek Road. Turn left and travel 3 miles up the canyon to the Field Research Station.

From Highway 1, take Pescadero Road east to Cloverdale Road and follow the above directions OR take Gazos Creek Road (just south of Pigeon Point) and travel east past the Cloverdale Road junction.

From the South Bay, take Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz, then take Highway 1 north to Gazos Creek Road, just south of Pigeon Point and opposite Gazos Creek State Beach. Travel east past the Cloverdale Road junction.
