Trail Building Projects

Trail Repair at Mt. Sutro Open Space Reserve

Join Trail Center volunteers working on trails in Mt. Sutro Open Space Reserve, overlooking the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. We will do brushing and tread maintenance to improve existing trails in a dense eucalyptus forest at the center of San Francisco.

Meet at summit of Mt. Sutro service road at end of Johnstone Drive (see directions below). Meet at 8:30 a.m.  for an introductory talk. We will work until about 3 or 3:30, with a break at noon for lunch.

The Trail Center provides tools, training, gloves, and refreshments after the workday. (Some areas of Mt. Sutro have poison oak; we provide barrier cream and Tecnu soap).

Participants should bring water, lunch, sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and layered clothing. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts provide protection against brambles, sticks, and poison oak.

For a map/routes to the Mt. Sutro trail build site, see the Trail Center project details map. Driving directions are also below.

Directions:

From the Peninsula: From northbound Highway 280, exit at 19th Avenue/Highway 1. In several blocks, stay in right lanes and continue north on Junipero Serra Blvd. At Sloat/St. Francis, angle right on Portola and continue north 5-6 blocks. Turn left on Laguna Honda 4 blocks to bottom of hill, right at Dewey, continuing on Laguna Honda 4 more blocks to Clarendon...

From the Sunset and Richmond: From Lincoln Way drive south 5-6 blocks on 7th Avenue. Just past Laguna Honda Reservoir, turn left on Clarendon...

From Points East: Take Monterey Blvd. exit of westbound Hwy 280, turn immediately right 2 blocks on Monterey then Diamond to Glen Park BART. Turn left on Bosworth, which becomes O'Shaughnessy, which becomes Woodside Blvd. when it crosses Portola (aka Upper Market). At bottom of hill, turn right on Laguna Honda 4 blocks and turn right on Clarendon...

Combined Directions:
...Drive east on Clarendon 4-6 blocks to summit. Here turn left on Johnstone into UCSF's Married Student Housing. Drive slowly to far end, continue through gate up one-lane service road to summit of Mt. Sutro. Park as directed, being careful not to block emergency access. Overflow parking is available on Clarendon (walk up Johnstone to summit).
