Trail Building Projects

Trail Construction at Butano State Park

For 2004, we will be starting a new project we are calling the “Redwood Flat Trail” until an official name is established. A recent land acquisition by Butano State Park has provided the Trail Center with the unique opportunity to re-open a long abandoned trail situated on an old logging road now located within the Park’s boundaries.

This trail provides a vital connecting link between other trails in Butano State Park and trails leading to Big Basin and the Año Nuevo State Preserve. It is approximately 1.5 miles in length and has a huge old-growth Redwood tree at the halfway mark. A topo map showing the proposed trail layout is available.

Participants should bring water, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, lunch and normal precautions against poison oak exposure (work gloves, long sleeved shirts and long pants). The Trail Center provides tools, training, gloves, and refreshments after the workday.

Supervising Ranger for this project is Michael Grant (650) 879-2044

For more information about Butano State Park, see the Butano State Park info page.

Directions: From all mid-peninsula and South Bay locations: Using either I-280 or Highway 101, exit Woodside Road (Highway 84) and head west, through Woodside, up and over Skyline Blvd (Highway 35) down through La Honda to the intersection with coastal Highway 1. Turn left onto Highway 1 going south to Pescadero Road. Go east on Pescadero Road and then south on Cloverdale Road to the Park entrance. Travel time to the Park from mid-Peninsula cities is about one hour and fifteen minutes. Campsites may be reserved at the Park for those who wish to stay.
