Montara Mountain - Saturday, 01 Jun 2013

Meet at 8:30 a.m. at southern entrance to McNee Ranch using the entrance at the Martini Creek gate. Drive down the road to the Ranger's house where we will be assembling. Transportation to the work site will be arranged from that location. We must have an accurate volunteer count to arrange for shuttles, so please make sure you have RDVP'd to the Volunteer Coordinator.

We will continue the tread repair work we were doing in May. This may be our last visit to Montara Mountain as the repair work will probably be finished on this date.

All volunteers MUST bring two quarts/liters of water or other liquid (e.g. sports drinks) as conditions on the trail and at the worksites may be very hot and exposed. Risk of dehydration needs to be avoided and a single 12 oz. bottle of water is not adequate for a workday of this length.

Sonora Pass - Joint Project with the Pacific Crest Trail Association - Thursday, 25 Jul 2013

There was a late season thunder storm in the Carson Iceberg area that did
considerable damage to the trail including the north side of Sonora Pass. A
lot of tread destruction, uphill and downhill erosion, slides, etc.

Volunteers should be fit as the PCT here is at 10,600 ft+ and work may be strenuous. We will convoy daily to the trailhead and hike 2.5 miles to the work site. Note that protection from the sun at 10,000 ft is important, and early arrival is encouraged to acclimate.

Plan to arrive in camp Thursday night, July 25th. You will need to arrange for your own meals on Thursday. Sonora Pass driving is hazardous at night, so please leave early enough to arrive while there is still daylight.

We will work all day on the Friday (26th), Saturday (27th) and one-half day on Sunday (28th). Breakfast and lunch will be provided to volunteers on Sunday.

Sonora Pass weather can be variable, so be prepared for all conditions. Bring layers of clothes to protect against the elements. On one trip it was 38 degrees and sleeting when we left on Sunday.

Pescadero Creek County Park - Saturday, 24 Aug 2013

Ranger Mark Schneider has been working on a new realignment of the Pomponio Trail within Pescadero Creek County Park and has urgently requested assistance from the Trail Center.

Here's a unique opportunity to build new trail from scratch. The area, known as Parke Gulch, is a hidden gem within the Santa Cruz Mountains. This typical redwood forest was not heavily logged, so many medium-sized trees remain in Parke Gulch. This is the first time in the Trail Center’s 29-year history that we will be working in a first-growth redwood forest. What a treat.

New trail construction for this project will be on the order of a quarter of a mile. Mark, along with other volunteers, has built the other quarter mile of trail already. This reroute will eliminate a confusing section of trail that included a piece of an old dead-end road. It also eliminates a steep section of trail. But, most importantly, it allows hikers the chance to see more of the beauty of Parke Gulch.

Please Note: Access to this section of the Park depends on decent, non-wet weather, so in the case of any serious rain the week before the trailbuild, there is a good chance the event will be cancelled. RSVP’s are recommended so that we can notify you if that occurs. We will also be shuttling volunteers in vehicles from the trailhead to the worksite so it’s imperative that you arrive on time. Also, due to the shuttle and distance back to the trailhead, it is recommended volunteers stay the entire workday for this project.

Bay Area Ridge Trail - San Mateo County - Saturday, 02 Nov 2013

We will be doing a massive clean-up and widening of the Skyline Trail segment between Wunderlich Park and Huddart Park. There are long stretches of this trail segment where the tread is very narrow or where it's encroaching on the outside edge and needs to be re-centered. Some drainage problems and any brushing required will be done.

We'll meet at the Archery Range and then shuttle all volunteers to our entry point.

Trail groups and outdoor organizations throughout the Bay Area will be participating in a wide-area maintenance day for the 350-mile Ridge Trail. Please join us in this major community effort.
