Wet Meadows - Joint Project with the Pacific Crest Trail Association

The Pacific Crest Trail is a 2,650 mile trail running from Canada to Mexico, and is considered one of the most scenic and important world-class trails on the planet. The Pacific Crest Trail Association is a group that coordinates the continuing development, use, maintenance and support for this trail. As Californians we should feel privileged to be so close to this trail which is enjoyed each year by many thousands of visitors from around the globe.

The Trail Center and the PCTA will be sponsoring a project over the weekend of July 31st to August 3rd on the section of the PCT from Blue Lakes Road south to Wet Meadows. We will be arriving in camp near Lower Blue Lake on the evening of July 31st, and we'll be working all day Friday August 1st, Saturday August 2nd, and one-half day on Sunday August 3rd. We'll break camp in the early afternoon on Sunday and return home.

Location: Wet Meadows Reservoir, Toiyabe National Forest, California - Pacific Crest Trail

Directions: This section of the PCT is roughly half way between Carson Pass and Ebbetts Pass. Blue Lakes Road is a well maintained access road to the Blue Lakes area, and junctions with State Route 88 just east of Carson Pass, near Hope Valley.

There will be easy car-camping near Lower Blue Lake, and a short hike to the worksites along the PCT south of Blue Lakes Road.

Additional Information: Volunteers should plan on being in camp by the evening of Thursday, July 31st. If possible, come earlier and allow 24 hours to acclimatize to the altitude of this location. There is no fee for camping. The campground is on U. S. Forest Service property.

All food and tools will be supplied by the PCTA, and volunteers need only bring their workday and camping equipment. We will be working at high altitudes, so sun-screen, lip balm and sun-glasses are advised. This is a poison-oak free environment. Bring along a camp chair or folding beach chair if you have one.

Thursday, July 31, 2008 - Sierra Trip - 7/31 to 8/3: Activities: The work involves brushing and general tread maintenance over an approximately four-mile stretch of the PCT. In addition to Upper and Lower Blue Lakes, this stretch of trail passes by Tamarack Lake, Lily Pad Lake, Upper and Lower Sunset Lake and Summit Lake before you reach Wet Meadows Reservoir.
